Instrumental Chamber Concert Recording
For my large ensemble tracking project, I was tasked with Georgia Curtis, Kristen Odlivak, and Elijiah Penix to record the Capital University Instrumental Chamber Music Choir concert in Huntington Recital Hall on Capital’s campus. I was the Backup Recording Engineer, so I was tasked specifically with bringing a secondary recording device, which ended up being my zoom recorder. I was tasked with setting it in an optimum place in the hall to get the most amount of concert audio with minimal crowd noise from the audience. I also assisted with transporting much of the larger materials like stands, yellow jackets (cable guards), microphones, cables, etc. I was able to run our CAT5e ethernet cable for the Dante system, ensured great cable organization and concealment, and set up the Beta181’s as well as the KM184’s. While I wasn’t present for the checking of signals, we went into the concert believing everything was getting a good signal and working well, especially because of the even signal levels showing up in ProTools. However, upon starting the concert, we realized that the left of the KM184’s was not getting a good signal and, frankly, seemed broken. Luckily, we did not have any other issues during the recording of the concert and were able to capture a good sound from the zoom recorder that we used in place of the KM184 pair. The two songs listed below are a few of the brass-only pieces played during the concert with slight plugin, panning, and fader edits to ensure the greatest audio quality while keeping the sound as natural as possible.
